We have been examining the Lese' Majeste' laws in Thailand protecting majestic interests. We now learn the that the Thai government is calling for citizens to blow the whistle on crown opposition via a new website.
How is this dangerous? How could this lead to widespread panic comparable to McCarthy hearings and the "Red Scare" in the 1950s?

I have a few thoughts.
"The political climate in Thailand is nearing a situation like a police state. The courts are biased," according to a Thai political analyst who fled to Britain last weekend, facing lese' majesete charges. See http://www.radioaustralianews.net.au/stories/200902/2489628.htm?desktop

Historically, the king has overstepped his limited monarchy status, and been more of a political character, squashing coups favoring democracy. Historically, his majesty has done a splendid job of reaching the people via humanitarian, and
charitable efforts but has consistently never truly supported government officials. This a calculated move to separate himself from any criticism. According to some accounts the monarchy is very weak at this time. The article points out "to move forward, the academic says Thais in favour of real democracy should push for the abolition of the monarchy, which is one of the most highly respected institutions in Asia.

In any event, the current political state seems to be a mess in Thailand, any negative opinion toward the crown as pointed out as of late is like Americans condoning Communism in the 1950s.

There is a red scare in Thailand. The supporters of former Prime Minister Thaksin, are actually wearing red shirts, anti-monarchy, and ready to tear the country apart. History does repeat itself. The color red is back in a different way.
